Canterbury Young Professionals here to stay in 2012

Despite the ongoing aftershocks in Christchurch, the Canterbury Young Professionals (CYP) believes the outlook for the city’s many young professions is bright.

CYP aims to provide its members with opportunities to foster professional networking through business and social events.

"With professional firms now widely spread across Christchurch we feel CYP has a greater role than ever in uniting young people in the early stages of their career", says Andrew Riches, Chair of the CYP.

"CYP is an organisation that aims to bring together those beginning their profession in Christchurch to network and meet one another in a fun social setting"

Three launch events are planned at local bars around the city to give people a feel for what it’s all about:

Thursday 9^th February

CYP Presidents report 2011

Wow, what a year with a difference! We were half way through our launch calendar of events when

the February earthquake hit. In an Exec meeting held shortly after it was decided that our strategy

and the way we operated for the remainder of the year had to change significantly. No longer did we

have members work places located around a core city centre and no longer did we have central city

venues and bars where CYP events have been traditionally based. The changes we made were as

follows:

 Making the membership free for the year

 Cutting expenditure where required, budgeting for events to run to cost

 Placing a strong emphasis on social events for the first six months

 Utilising Facebook and upgrading the quality of our emails

 A strong commitment to the CYP online development project

This was appreciated by members. These decisions have paid off, our membership numbers and

event attendances have grown by over 150 members from approximately 300 to 450+. The year

resulted in simple events that brought young professionals together for what has otherwise been a

quiet year in the Christchurch social scene.

I owe a huge thank you to the Exec, you have been amazing, and although we have lost a few to

other cities and distant lands we have remained a tight unit. In case you don’t know who they are

and what they do here is a list of the Exec:

Geoff Walker (President)

Andrew Riches (formerly the secretary, he moved to social rep during the year) Andrew played a key

role in organising most of our large events and sponsorship.

Sarah Hall (Treasurer) – has kept us on track financially

Jackie Frampton (moved into secretary) – has kept us on track formerly and helped with events

including the ball

Ed Hughes (Sponsorship) – has kept our sponsors on track and helped with events

Emily Smith (Communications) – the mastermind behind our emails and Facebook and has helped

with events

Nicolette Le Cren (Marketing) – a key player in our online development project, Nicolette has been

on the Exec for a number of years now

Anthony Rohan (Webmaster?) – Also a key player in our online development project, Ants has been

on the Exec for a number of years now

Debbie Bellis (Marketing) – A key player in the online development project, Debbie also organised all

of the end of month drinks and helped with events

Sarah Roberts (Business Events) – Sarah was the mastermind and coordinator of our business eventsVictoria Berryman (was social) – Was the mastermind of our social events before she moved to

Auckland

Trent Geekie (Was the second treasurer) – Kept event budgets in control before he moved to Salt

Lake City, USA

Scott Lochhead (Was sponsorship) – Liaison for sponsors before he moved to Auckland

The 3rd issue of the CYP Magazine is rebranded HOTSHOTS! This is the last issue that will be provided in print for all members. Future issues will be available for download from this web page in an Adobe pdf format (see below to download HOTSHOTS! Issue 3). This way CYP saves trees and you can share the magazine content easily with others and quickly click through to other website references provided in the electronic version.

We'd like to hear from you as well. You have the opportunity to be a contributor - whether it's providing us with a review, press release or a bullet of information - and the more we get from you, the members, the more of a member publication it becomes.

Latest HOTSHOTS! Issue

Our commitment to high quality events

Since CYP's launch party on 2 August 2007 we've held a range of business and social events to help provide our members with opportunities to network, gain skills and have some fun along the way.

Our inaugural ball in September 2007 at the Great Hall and our Christmas Cocktail Party at Fisher Galleries were both sell-outs. Our 80s Cocktail Party in April 2008 was a riot (not literally, though that much fluro in one location was a crime), and the second CYP Ball in September 2008 really did raise the bar for any young professional social event. We've also hosted business events on everything from personal finances to managing employees; had a birthday party where a lucky member won an iPod!; and to top off 2008 in style, we gathered in numbers to wish each other Merry Christmas.

This year will be no different, yet there will be many changes.

In saying it will be no different, we want our members to know that they will be able to expect the same high quality social and business events, but with a new look, eager and enthusiastic executive committee, and an action packed calendar, we can promise that this year will be better in every way. A higher level of social event and more very valuable business events run by our partners and sponsors.
